Washington Mutual Becoming Chase
WaMu branches in California have been rebranded to Chase, but WaMu accounts in CA won’t transfer to Chase’s banking system until October 2009. So continue to bank at your current branch and they’ll let you know when other Chase branches become available.
- Chase is the consumer and commercial banking division of JPMorgan Chase.
- Chase was known as Chase Manhattan Bank until it merged with JPMorgan in 2000.
- Washington Mutual (WaMu) the bank was placed it into the receivership of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), which sold the banking subsidiaries (minus unsecured debt or equity claims) to JPMorgan Chase for $1.9 billion.
- Washington Mutual Bank’s closure and receivership is the largest bank failure in American financial history.
In March 2009, WaMu’s holding company filed suit against the FDIC for unjustified seizure and an extremely low sale price to JPMorgan Chase, which then promptly filed a counterclaim.
And the saga continues…
