HK Super Market
HanKook Supermarket is big. It makes it easy to live your life wholly subsisting on Korean food. It’s needless to list everything they sell. Just think of what you can buy back in Seoul, you’re likely to find it here.
Aside from Korean and Japanese products, they also have the standard American fare like Oscar Mayer cold cuts, Horizon Organic Milk, Naked food bars… though at steeper prices than at the mainstream American supermarkets like Ralphs and Vons.
Korean dishes are freshly prepared on the premises and then wrapped in large, individual portions. Available around mid-morning.
- 빈대떡 (bindaetteok = Korean mung-bean “pancake”)
- 순대 (soondae = Korean blood sausage)
- 떡볶이 (tteokbokki = rice cakes with red-pepper paste)
A wide variety of 반찬 (banchan = side dishes) made on site and also some imported from South Korea. They carry different kinds of kimchi from single-serving packets to large jars.
The prices are competitive. In fact, they sell Monster Energy Drink at the lowest price anywhere I’ve been. And the Cal-King plastic case containing 7 organic kiwi! As of March 2009:
Bindaettok (Korean “pancake”) | $3.50 per pound |
Chino Valley Ranchers’ Organic Eggs (Jidori) 6-pack | $3.99 |
Monster Energy Drink (except Java Coffee) | $1.99 |
Kimchi, 80-gram pack | $1.19 |
Caffe Latte | $1.29 |
Kiwi Fruit, loose (not good) | $0.74 /lb |
Cal-King Organic Kiwi (6 or 7 in a plastic case) | $0.99 |
Regular Bananas | $0.79 / lb |
Bolthouse Farms, 1-liter Juice Bottle | $3.79 + 0.10 crv |
Kit Kat crisp wafers, 1.5 oz brick | $0.89 |
Ghana Milk Chocolate (Lotte, 22 grams) | $0.69 |
Doenjang (soybean paste, 450 grams) | $3.49 |
They carry awful-looking sliced American bread and several mass-produced bakery products like 4-piece castella from Cosmos Bakery. But in front there is a section selling Western pastries from Bosco Cake Salon. Right next to that is a section that sells tteok (traditional Korean rice cake) made by the Happy Rice Cake House.
